Review of Fresh:Detox edition

Good ol' fashioned hippie food

Because I have been to Fresh zillions of times, as I'm sure most Torontonians have, I won't spend too much time talking about the cuisine in general, but more specifically on how it fares as a restaurant destination for someone on a cleanse.

First, fresh is a bright, busy restaurant, bustling with those seeking out shots of wheatgrass, vegan cookies and the like. With offerings like quinoa crusted onion rings (can't have) and carrot juice (can have) on the menu, naturally Fresh was the place I thought of to go for a detox meal out.

Sometimes, when I'm feeling indulgent I'll get one of their several varieties of veggie burgers and a side of sweet potato fries. Note: do not get the miso gravy, if you are a miso gravy fan. Since I've had the version done by similarly-themed, yet not as yuppie or chain like, Vancouver restaurant the Naam, it's really tough to choke down the salty yet bland Fresh sauce.

Any way, I digress. Their bowls are where to be for someone on a detox (no wraps or buns allowed). I got the Powerhouse bowl ($14) mostly because the tahini dressing it claimed to come with was basically the only one I could have (given my no-fermentation guidelines, I can't have vingear, soy sauce or tamari).

It had tofu, sunflower spouts, tomatoes, avocado, red onion chick peas and toasted seeds ( I could only see pumpkin).

Be careful to make sure that the bowl comes with the spicy tahini sauce as advertised, because when I asked, the waitress said it came with powerhouse dressing, which had tamari. However, I imagine you could really order any bowl that's detox friendly (most appear to be) and order the tahini dressing (the only sauce that appeared to be).

It was hearty-- I took some home because you can only order one size. One thing is that a large portion of it is rice, I'd prefer more veggies.

Also, the tofu was way too salty, I must have broken a rule on the first day because it tasted like it had been drenched in soy sauce.

Overall though, detox or no, Fresh is a great place to go for a light (though overpriced) meal that also hits the spot. Although detox choices are limited to their bowls, there are plenty of  them.

Highly recommended for detoxers sick of cooking for themselves. Too bad I wasted this on the first night!
