Restaurant review catch up: Koosh Bistro

1047 King St W.
Hamilton, On

A popular bistro in downtown Hamilton that serves fresh homemade pasta with a Persian twist. Rich flavours, but why not compliment the homemade noodles with fresh Parm? Pasta is delicious, but the other dishes are inconsistent. Still, a welcome change from the chains!

A pretty giant menu of Italian staples is sure to please even the pickiest of eaters at your table. And while the food is good for the most part, the complete package of execution on some of the dishes falls a little short-- and a little flat on colour --especially given that the pastas run about $20 and up.

This pesto bread, with garlic basil pesto bread and tomato slices, topped with melted mozzarella and parm for $9.99 packed a lot more flavour than the largely one-toned picture suggests. Couldn't tell the pesto from store bought though, and what's with the low-grade packaged parm?

In a last minute decision to lighten up my meal from just a big plate of cream-heavy pasta, I opted for the Chicken Tuscana ($19.95) with just a side of the creamy pasta. What a mistake! The chicken was dry or possibly reheated, with the uninspired attempt at a rosemary garlic butter sauce giving it the same flavour I could find in a Lean Cuisine dinner. The real star was my (rather small) side of Koosh pasta, with their fresh homemade noodles prosciutto and mushrooms smothered in a garlic white wine cream sauce. Still regretting that I didn't get the full plate.

My friend, a veteran of Koosh decided on one of the more unique offerings on the menu, the Mizithra pasta (15.99), a combination of spinach linguine, spicy marinara sauce, mizithra cheese and ghee  (South Asian clarified butter). She added chicken for another $5 I believe. The serving size was huge and the flavour combination was something like a richer twist on a traditional spaghetti and tomato sauce.

I'd go back, but definitely stick with a full portion of pasta., the three or four bites in my dish alone were enough to send me back.
