What's a foodie do with a random Saturday night? Why, randomly attend a Chinese banquet, in honour of, well, discerning was difficult, but I think it may have been the beginning of spring? Well, maybe in China. Who cares? It was so much fun and 10 courses for $25, including tax and tip.
A true cultural experience from start-- walking in to find a crowded dance floor of Chinese line dancers --- to finish -- yup, still line dancing, this time to the host/ karaoke singer's rendition of Fools Rush In. The dinner consisted mainly of seafood (spoiler alert: shark soup was one of them) and meats, with little on the veggie front.
Here's a taste of my random Saturday night:
Course 1: Crispy pork, skin eaten separately with --not noodles-- but jellyfish (tastes like a slimy noodle) |
Course 2: The only visible veg of the night, served lukewarm with shrimp and scallops
Course 3: Crab claws, surrounded by shrimp then deep-fried to deliciousness (my fave) |
Course 4: The controversial (and I thought illegal) shark fin soup course, the shark fin was little transparent pieces of cartilage that I ate my way around. I don't see why this is even a meal to defend-- the broth is like flavourless, glutinous hot and sour. |
Course 5: Crispy chicken, head included. Very tasty, notwithstanding the little guy staring at me. |
Course 6: Relax, it's not brain, but salty, soya-y king mushroom, mussels, scallops and Chinese broccoli. |
Course 7: Fish that tasted straight from the lake, the waiter comes and uses a wild technique to debone the suckers. |
Course 8: The long-awaited but tricky to eat lobster dish, deep-fried, cut into chunks and coated in a sweet gooey sauce, which adds to the challenge of removing lobster from the shell with chopsticks. |
Course 9: Finally, some traditional noodles and rice. As a taste-combination lover, would have appreciated these with some of the other strongly flavoured dishes. |
Course 10: I put an end to this. These warm red bean soups and some dry cookies didn't look appetizing enough to get me to push through my full feeling.
On to the dancing! What better way to work off a 10-course dinner than the Macarena?
I'm not a fan of red bean soup. You didn't miss much there :)
ReplyDeleteThe brain mushroom is disgusting and girls shouldn't be allowed to look at such icky stuff. The slick fish isn't far behind! So not proponents of the "first you feast with your eyes?" Or too busy dancing to care-okay?
