Winterlicious review: Luma

Luma
350 King St. W

A swanky home to celebs during Tiff, the Oliver &Bonacini resto in the Bell Lightbox is as close to a red carpet experience we lowly Winterlicious diners could find -- and for $35 the price is definitely right.

Luma may not seem impressive upon first glance, as you glance into an open, museum eatery type space-- don't worry it's just the cocktail lounge. The real treat awaits beyond the mesmerizing wine fridge.
The large room is comfortable and polished with modernly elegant touches and interesting lighting fixtures for flare. Service was friendly, knowledgeable and prompt. And the food  was hearty and well-executed.  A special wine list for us Winterlicious diners was friendly on the wallet, and offered the option of a wine pairing with each course.

I had roasted beetroot soup with a blue cheese cream, walnuts and apple to start. It was a good option among the three offered on the Winterlicious menu much like a creamed borsht, but I'd rather be more adventurous next time. Could have done with more of the add-ons to give it a better depth of flavour.

My main, a large portion of roasted chicken breast with thinly sliced chorizo on top, sitting atop creamy semolina with a few bites of kale and bit of chorizo crumbled over.  The chicken was absolutely cooked to perfection, with crispy skin. The texture and flavours of the dish combined well. Semolina, apparently the purified middles of durum wheat usually used to make pasta or couscous, tastes like something between a cream of wheat or gourmet version of mashed potatoes and the brown au just poured over top gave what could be a potentially bland base some punch.

AND finally for the piece de resistance--the amazingly indulgent crispy edged but moist chocolate bread and butter pudding with butterscotch syrup, flaked white chocolate and edible pansies on top. Made with big chunks of dried croissants. Every single bite was a little taste of heaven. God, I want to go back if only to have another taste of the rich bread pudding. Definitely take advantage of Winterlicious to try out the amazing setting and food at Luma.
