Maple Leaf Gardens reopens to throngs of fans ... of food

I got to see the new Loblaws store at Maple Leaf Gardens today, and frankly it's pretty cool. Check out my video:

I didn't have time to take photos so, these are courtesy of my amazing friend and fellow journo Mary Gazze. She wanted to check out the store for herself but couldn't help reporting as she shopped.

This is the five-metre high wall of cheese. Mary reports one of the employees told her they were fake and upon closer inspection, she said the really do appear plastic-y.

That red dot represents the geographical spot where centre ice of Maple Leaf Garden once was.

  1. Which part of the store did you like the best? It's out of your way, so would you go shop there for the unique stuff it has?

As a side note: the employee at the cheese wall was totally passionate. He went through the different types of Gruyere and recommended the best one, depending on what I wanted to use it for.

  2. re: the gruyere guy, wow that's dedication! Man. As for my favourite part, it was tough to enjoy as it was so frantic to get everything. From what I saw the Joe Fresh actually had some really awesome stuff and I thought the patisserie with like 20 different cupcakes looked amazing. I would also be interested to talk to some of these passionate employees on specific menu choices. I am going back to actually shop there on Sunday, so yes, I think it's as destination shop even though it's far. Definitely would have to shop light or get a zipcar.

  6. Just in case Loblaws execs are reading this: the cheese wall guy was NOT the employee that told me the cheese was fake! It was an employee from a different section of the store and I will protect that source (not saying if a man or woman) so they can keep their job.
